Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Consignor Registration fee?

The consignor registration fee is $15 and can be paid using PayPal. You do not have to have a PayPal account to pay the registration.

If I consign do I get to shop early?

Of Course! As a consignor, you get to shop before we open to the public.

Will this take a lot of time?

Think about the time spent listing an item on a buy/sell/trade group and then the time to meet up with someone. Preparing your items for The Hippo Events is comparable to the same amount of time.

What do you accept?

We accept almost anything in good working condition.

At the Children’s Event — clothing up to kid size 16, toys, baby gear, shoes, books, sporting goods, furniture, dance wear, costumes, bedding, decor, out door toys, bikes and much more!

At the Teen/Adult Event — clothing from junior sizes up to size 4x/5x in both men’s and women’s, home decor items, kitchen items, furniture, crafting items, shoes, purses, pet items, tools, fishing gear, gardening items and much more!

For the online events– We accept everything at a normal children’s event except clothing, shoes and accessories. We do accept Holiday themed clothing and outfits.

Won't I make less than selling it myself at a yard sale or Buy/sell/trade group?

Absouletly not! People love to try to get you to come down on your price. You hear sob stories of why they need it cheaper or point out what is wrong with it to get you to lower the price. Also, think about the gas you spend to meet up with them.

At The Hippo Events, our shoppers know that the items are in good condition and they can’t haggle the price.  We ask our consignors to be fair in their pricing and our shoppers have come to know and trust the Hippo Events.

How does this work?

It is really simple! First you register to consign and then use the online tagging system to price and tag your items.

Next select a drop off time to bring your items to the Hernando County Fairgrounds.

The day after the event is over you come back to the Fairgrounds to pick up your check.

What percent will I make?

The base split is 65/35 which means you make 65% and you pay us a commission of 35%.  You are prepping, pricing and tagging your items and dropping them off.  Then we take over and we sell the items for you for a 35% commission.

The 35% commission that you pay us to sell your items covers the cost of rent, marketing/advertising, credit card fees, all the equipment used to set up the event, processing payments, running the event itself, bringing in he shoppers and other cost. If you would like to help us during an event  you can pay us a smaller commission.

We know not everyone can help out during the event that’s why we offer different tier levels for consignors. Each tier has different splits. The more crew member shifts the less commission you pay to us and there are those earlier shopping privileges too!

Here are the Consignor Tier levels:

  •  Tier One — Consignor with no Crew Member shifts (65/35 split)
  • Tier Two — Consignor with one Crew Member shift (65/35 split and earlier shopping times)
  • Tier Three — Consignor with two Crew Member shifts (70/30 split and earlier shopping times)
  • Tier Four — Consignor with three Crew Member shifts (75/25 split and earlier shopping times)
  • Tier Five — Consignor with four Crew Member shifts (80/20 split and earlier shopping times)

I heard I can get someone to tag my items for me, is this true?

Yes, you can! We offer a Busy Mom tagging service for anyone who wants to consign but wants someone else to price and tag their items.

A Busy Mom Consignors does receive a little bit of a lower percentage because someone else is doing the work for them but you get the same benefits of early shopping and getting your check the day after the event just like a regular consignor.

The first step to using the service is to register to consign then email us and ask for a tagger and we will get you hooked up!

To read more about the Busy Mom service click on the Busy Mom link in the menu at the top of the screen.

What is a Hippo crew member and do I have to be one?

A Hippo Crew Member is a consignor that helps us sell their items which means they pay us a smaller commission.  So that means more money in your pocket!

Being a Hippo Crew Member is optional. Each consignor decides what tier level they want to be at. The more crew member shifts the less you have to pay us.

Here are the different tier levels:

Tier One — Just a Consignor ( makes 65% )

Tier Two — Consignor with one Crew member shift (makes 65% and earlier shopping time)

Tier Three — Consignor with Two Crew Member shifts (makes 70% and earlier shopping time )

Tier Four — Consignor with  Three Crew Member shifts (makes 75% and earlier shopping time )

Tier Five — Consignor with Four Crew Member shifts (makes 80% and earlier shopping time)

A crew member helps during the events with various things from helping set up, helping during drop off, to helping with shoppers or help with tear down.

Do I really have to use wire hangers?

Yes we do require that all clothing be hung on wire hangers except for jeans at the Teen/Adult event.

I know, I hate them too but we have very limited space and we can fit twice the amount of clothing items on our racks when we use wire hangers.

If you need wire hangers, we have them for sale. We buy them in bulk and sell them at our cost to consignors which is 8 cents a piece. Just email us, send us a Facebook message and let us know how many you want.

We have planned times and locations to meet up with consignors so they can buy wire hangers from us.

For the online events, wire hangers are NOT needed. We only accept Holiday themed clothing and outfits at online events. The outfits pieces must be safety pinned together and put into a plastic type bag so we can keep them together.

Do I get the hangers back?

No, it slows us down at the registers when we have to take clothing off of the hangers especially when things are pinned on to the hanger.  But if you buy clothing, you get to keep those hangers and save them for the next event!

Is there a limit on how many items I can sell?

At the Children’s Event, there is one category with limits.  DVDs/Blu-Rays have a limit of 10 items. No other category at the Children’s Event has limits.

At the Teen/Adult Event, we do have a limits

Here are the clothing limits: *Please note that jeans are a separate limit and are not included in your other clothing counts.

  • 50 Junior sized clothing
  • 25 pairs of Junior sized Jeans

  • 50 Men’s Clothing
  • 25 pairs of Men’s Jeans
  • 10 Maternity Clothing

  • Books — limit of 10
  • DVDs/Blu-Rays — limit of 10
  • Blank Picture Frames — limit of 5

Consignor Tier levels? I am so confused!!

It’s just a fancy way of you choosing your involvement with The Hippo Events. Some like to have The Hippo Events do all the work of selling their items which means they get the base 65% and pay Hippos a commission of 35% for selling their items. Others want to be more involved in the process and pay us less of a commission.

Each Tier has a different level of involvement with different levels of splits (your percentage and the commission you pay to us).  The more crew member shifts you decide to do, the less commission you pay to us.

Here are the different tier levels:

  • Tier One — Consignor with no Crew Member shifts (make 65%)
  • Tier Two — Consignor with one Crew Member shift (make 65% and earlier shopping times)
  • Tier Three — Consignor with two Crew Member shifts (make 70% and earlier shopping times)
  • Tier Four — Consignor with three Crew Member shifts (make 75% and earlier shopping times)
  • Tier Five — Consignor with four Crew Member shifts (make 80% and earlier shopping times)
